A photographic series of annual celebrations of La Feria in Zacatepec Morelos Mexico and Carnaval in San Francisco, California. Holding people together through music, food, energy and prayer. Borders don't stop tradition. Traditions keep people alive.
Growing up, there was 2 community celebrations I looked forward to attend:
Las Ferias de Zacatepec Morelos, Mexico.
The Annual Carnaval Parade in San Francisco, California.
Both shared music, food, laughter, amusements, children running, dance, prayer and belonging.
Ferias or (Las Fiestas) are annual fairs in small towns in Mexico that often celebrates the towns Saint. They run anywhere between 3 days to 2 weeks. Relatives from the North (USA) fly in to be a part of the celebrations. Filling up their cup of old times, reminiscent memories.
Founded in 1979, The Carnaval Parade is multi-day event that celebrates the diverse Latin American, Caribbean, and African diasporic traditions through a massive two-day street festival and a vibrant Grand Parade.
I have attended both events as a participant and attendee.
Growing up in San Francisco, I have noticed how so many people look forward to attending Carnaval.
It's a place for migrants to hear familiar voices, songs and foods. A day where people feel like they belong. Where there is no fear and only hope.
This project holds photos from Las Ferias in 2024 and Carnaval dating back to 2023.
