Heat

In the beginning, the word Heat was used. I spent 2 Years travelling in Saudi Arabia, observing and capturing different aspects and the impact of Heat on local society.

In the beginning was the word. Heat.

Despite the harsh climate, Saudi society is socially cohesive and family-oriented and enjoys spending time outdoors. The photo of a picnic captures a family in a palm grove, a typical location for such acceptable conditions, as the palm tree plays the role of air conditioning. The past, present and future meet at one point. Saudi society is at a crossroads, on the brink of a social volatility that can take a turn for the worse from day to day or continue towards a freer society. Sneakers are not only protection from the heat, but the heat brought this element to traditional women's clothing, and women proudly display it. The palm tree has been a fundamental protection since the days before oil—electricity after it. Arabs are people of the desert, whether rich or poor, urban or rural. The desert is home, where it pays to feel like an Arab in the desert. In Saudi Arabia, it is forbidden to work outdoors when it is above 50 degrees, so officially it is still 49, and these brave workers, gardeners, and hotel workers work with a smile and dedication to support their distant families, whom they will not see for years.
