Falu

Falu (Hungarian for 'village') documents resourcefulness in Hungary's smallest communities. A reflective photographic portrayal of everyday resilience and the felt realities of rural life.

The photobook Falu (Hungarian for 'village') is the visual culmination of extensive artistic PhD research into the resourcefulness, resilience, and adaptation within Hungary's smallest rural communities (under 100 inhabitants) as they navigate socio-economic change. Drawing from five years of fieldwork, including the projects 'You Were Never Really Here' and 'We Are Not Birds, We Are All Human,' Falu presents a nuanced portrait of everyday life and the felt realities of these peripheries.

Adopting a reflective documentary mode, informed by the photographer's autoethnographic journey and a critical engagement with documentary traditions, Falu moves beyond straightforward representation. The book intentionally employs playful sequencing, juxtaposition with texts, and ambiguity, inviting the viewer to navigate the space.
