Project title: Beyond Five — A Portrait of Human Diversity

Project description

Polydactyly is a congenital condition in which a person is born with extra fingers or toes. These photographs document an individual with visible differences in the hands and feet, inviting viewers to look beyond conventional ideas of the human body.

The project explores the relationship between physical difference, identity, dignity and the diversity of human development. Through a close-up study and a full portrait, the photographs present both the specific physical characteristics of polydactyly and the person who lives with them.

Rather than treating the condition as a curiosity, the work seeks to encourage understanding and respectful representation. It asks viewers to reflect on how society perceives bodily differences and to recognise the humanity, individuality and dignity of every person.

Polydactyly can occur on its own or be associated with genetic factors. The photographs are a visual record, not a medical diagnosis, and the individual’s personal medical history is not assumed.

Photographer’s statement: This project aims to combine visual documentation with a message of inclusion, encouraging a more thoughtful understanding of congenital differences.
