Dear clouds,

I have spent a long time looking at you.

Long enough to notice that you never stay the same. You gather, drift, dissolve and return, endlessly becoming something else. I try to hold you still, knowing that by the time I have done so, you have already changed.

Perhaps that is why I keep looking.

It is intimate to watch something that can never know you are watching. You pass above us without intention, carrying no memory of where you have been or where you are going. Yet we project ourselves onto you. We find faces, landscapes, bodies, storms. We find stories in things that have none.

Sometimes you are soft enough to make the sky feel close. Sometimes you are immense and dark, gathering above us like something ancient. You can make an ordinary afternoon feel briefly enormous.

You make me look up.

To notice something that asks nothing of us.

To feel the quiet sadness of knowing that every beautiful thing is already on its way somewhere else.

Yours, for as long as you remain,

A.
