This is an open call to invite an Italy-based artist working with photography for a fully funded one-month residency culminating in a solo exhibition in Gothenburg, in early 2025.

Overview

The open call is open to Italy-based artists (regardless of nationality) working with photography. This also includes multidisciplinary artists who involve photography as part of their practice. To get the most out of the residency, the artist must be comfortable communicating in English. The residency is scheduled for 25 February–25 March, 2025 (with flexibility in shifting the period slightly if needed).

Practical Info

The selected artist receives a final solo exhibition, a €800 artist fee, €350 as travel compensation, a €300 production fee, a free studio space at Kulturhuset Bergsjön, free accommodation, free access to Göteborgs Bildverkstad, collective workshop for image production. Plus, mentorship sessions with artist and curator Oscar Ramos, curatorial support by Stefano Conti, and possibility of carrying out gallery visits, artist talks, attending openings, etc. Local transportation, shipping of artworks, subsistence, and insurance are not included.

The studio is at Kulturhuset Bergsjön, a new cultural center located on the outskirts of Gothenburg and easily reachable in 30 minutes by tram. It comprises a library, a café, and ateliers where locals can take part in ceramic workshops or collective readings. The studio consists of a private simple room equipped with Wi-Fi, a table, a chair, wall space to pin sketches and notes. In the building, there is also a movie room where you can project videos and hold presentations. Keep in mind that Kulturhuset Bergsjön is open to the public, so there are people walking around the building, attending performances, reading books and such. The artists' room is private and has a door.

During the residency, the artist is expected to work towards an exhibition at Kulturhuset Bergsjön open between March 22–April 7, 2025. The exhibition may include both old and new works, work-in-progress and finished pieces. Swit Platform encourages the artist to see this moment as an opportunity for experimentation.

The jury consists of Stefano Conti (Founder of SWIT) and Gloria Pasotti (artist-in-residence 2024).

About SWIT Platform

SWIT is a curatorial and research project founded in 2022 by Stefano Conti, with the aim to strengthen the cooperation between Sweden-based and Italy-based emerging artists working with photography, supporting them through cultural exchanges. Through the establishment of informal opportunities for dissemination and production of knowledge (such as exhibitions, residencies, talks, publications, and online activities), the platform aims to stimulate a continuous process of mutual enrichment between Sweden and Italy. The ultimate goal of the cultural exchanges activated by SWIT is twofold. On one hand, they allow artists to gain exposure and establishment in new contexts abroad. On the other, they ensure that different audiences in different cities can access unique and original knowledge through collaborative and informal frameworks.
