My new work, Surface Tensions, reveals subtle disruptions and contradictions in interiors, much like family stories that evolve through continual retelling.
My photographs investigate the psychological and cultural dimensions of domestic space as they explore notions of comfort, class, and universal aspirations to control and transcend our environment. My new work, Surface Tensions, reveals subtle disruptions and contradictions in interiors, much like family stories that evolve through continual retelling. Possessions—whether purposefully displayed or carelessly left behind—hint at relationships, preoccupations, and desires. Mirrors, windows, and framed pictures on the walls add layers to the space that both expand and collapse perspectives. Objects and surfaces masquerade as something other than they are, complicating distinctions between authenticity and artifice. These visual and conceptual tensions create an interplay between the real and the surreal, security and unease. While the scenes are devoid of human presence, the stillness belies the tangle of interactions that have transpired or are unfolding outside of the frame.
