¿Qué lenguaje tiene la memoria?

¿Qué lenguaje tiene la memoria? (What Language Does Memory Have?) explores cultural intergenerational memory, and the ways family histories are carried, fragmented and transformed through migration and distance.

Growing up in Australia as the daughter of Chilean migrants, much of what I knew about Chile came through family stories, photographs and memories that were not my own. My family's experience of political violence and exile during Pinochet's dictatorship has shaped my relationship to a country I knew largely through the experiences of others. I am interested in how these inherited histories become part of our own identity, particularly when they are fragmented, unspoken or difficult to fully understand.

The series brings together black-and-white photographs of plants, landscapes and portraits, alongside images presented in negative form. I am drawn to this shift in perception and the way it reflects how we remember things.

At the heart of the work is a question about what we inherit from previous generations, and how much of our understanding of ourselves comes from memories that belong to someone else.
