Pathways explores how line, shape, colour, rhythm, texture and perspective create visual connections in photography, guiding the eye while inviting each viewer to discover their own interpretations.

Through photography, I explore the art of seeing — recognizing how the elements and principles of design reveal visual relationships in the world around us.

Across photographs taken in different countries and environments, I examine how line, shape, colour, scale, repetition, rhythm, contrast, texture, and perspective create pathways for the eye. These pathways exist not only in the physical spaces we encounter, but also in the ways we move through an image.

Some pathways are immediately recognizable: a narrow alley illuminated by sunlight, a walkway disappearing beneath autumn trees, or a caravan moving across a desert ridge. Others are less obvious, emerging through the sweeping curves of sand dunes, the intricate geometry of architecture, the delicate connections of a spider's web, or the repetition of forms across a weathered wall.

Even in the dense arrangement of bones within a catacomb, patterns emerge, inviting the eye to search for connections and directions.

Although these photographs depict vastly different subjects, each offers opportunities for discovery. A line may lead us toward a destination, a pattern may draw us into unexpected detail, and a change in perspective may alter what we notice or understand.

But the photographer does not determine every viewer’s journey.

What attracts one viewer's attention may go unnoticed by another. Each person brings their own experiences, associations, memories, and curiosity to an image, creating interpretations that extend beyond its original composition.

Pathways invites viewers to follow what catches their attention, explore unexpected relationships, and discover where their own observations might lead.

The photographer recognizes the pathways created by the elements and principles of design. The viewer decides where those pathways lead.
