Silence is not a sound or the lack of sound. It is a feeling that shuts our ears and opens our eyes and minds. This project investigates the experience of silence, defining it as a sensory catalyst that sharpens our visual perception.
Silence is a luxury in our modern world. Maybe one day we will forget what it feels like?
Comprising 18 photographs, this series explores latent movement that the human mind and gaze connects with sounds. Just by looking we can imagine the sound and find a pathway to a feeling within.
The project deconstructs silence through five distinct visual motifs: The imagined sound, the stillness preceding a new beginning, the fracturing of mass, boundaries unlocking new landscapes, and the temporal and spatial vacuum between stimulus and response.
The photographs establish silence as a vital, open space for reflection and human connection with nature and the self. The main characters of the narrative are the wind, the sand, the sun, the shadows and the imagination of the viewer.
All photos are shot with an Iphone during walks along the coastline and beaches of Saltum in the northern part of Denmark. They are all shot in the same place - within a range of 500 meters - but every day the beach presents something new to me: A mood, a colour, a motif, or a different light.
My method is very simple. I go and I listen with my eyes.
