begins with the personal and expands outward, documenting friends, the queer community, moments of mourning, and scenes of protest.
Dark room is a photographic series begun in 2021, in which the artist uses an automatic film camera to photograph herself, people around her, everyday scenes, and events of the present.
The series includes self-portraits and portraits of the artist’s partner made since 2021, as well as images of friends within the queer community, a memorial gathering for the October 29 disaster, protests advocating for the rights of transgender people and sex workers, and demonstrations calling for peace in Palestine. The title Dark room refers both to the darkroom in which photographs are developed and printed and to the uncertain, shadowed state through which an individual encounters the present. Within this darkness, the artist photographs herself and those around her, later encountering them again as images through the processes of developing and printing.
By approaching both personal life and social events through the same photographic method, the series considers how private memories and the historical realities of the present intersect, suggesting that the two cannot be understood as entirely separate.
