As a self portrait artist, I draw from my fashion background and deep psychological interests to resolve and understand the incongruities within myself and the core people around me. The answers I look for apply to anyone looking to resolve conflicts.
After completing a seven year body of work about family, relationships and loss, (self published in 2015,) I turned the camera towards myself. This current work, Conversations with Myself and Conversations Continued, began as an exploration of the values and expectations I inherited and adopted from my mother and her generation. I became aware of the incongruities between their and my core beliefs, and began my quiet and persistent struggle to declare myself independent from the hold it and she had on me, resulting in this extensive collection of self portraiture, and metaphorical still life and landscape imagery. This body of work depicts a range of emotional and psychological states of mind of women, layered and draped with their lived experiences, reverberating in its silence.
As a collection the work explores the shifting notions of self, where time is not linear and the past intervenes and destabilizes the present. Vintage references, from objects to clothing, signal personal history and bring time forward. The mirror is a portal to a liminal space where repetition of self regard creates infinite possibility. The photographs are "still" but the psyche is in motion.
